Your Return Offer Needs an Open Seat
Here’s the reality no one tells you when you start an internship: you can have a great summer and still end up with nothing if the headcount isn’t there. To get a return offer, the company needs an open seat to keep you there.
It’s the part of the process candidates are talking about right now. The Seattle Times reports that Microsoft is offering buyouts to roughly a quarter of its workforce. Nothing in the reporting we’ve seen ties that to interns or return offers, so we’re not saying Microsoft is pulling back on them. But a headline like that makes people look at what’s happening inside their own company, and a couple of candidates have shared what they’re seeing.
Netflix: A candidate who interned there last summer says the layoffs hit the new grad RO rate hard. They didn’t know the actual rate, only that the company reduced headcount after the layoffs. That’s one person and no numbers.
Adobe’s version is different. A candidate there says their org is in a hiring freeze after a leadership change, and that nobody in their org got an RO. The leadership change is their explanation, not something we’ve confirmed… and again, it’s one org.
A buyout headline, layoffs, a freeze are all different situations with the same end for interns: the seat either exists after your internship or it doesn’t (and that gets decided well above you).
But before you give up applying to internships, this isn’t a trend yet. It’s one headline and two candidate reports, and none of it has come from the companies themselves. Teams at these same companies may be fine. But it’s worth knowing now rather than in the last week of your internship, especially if you’re an international student who needs visa sponsorship and the RO part of your plan.
What this means for candidates
Ask your recruiter or manager where RO decisions stand and whether your team has headcount for new grads. Don’t wait for the offer email to find out.
Don’t treat a strong internship as a guaranteed RO. If your company has had layoffs, buyouts, a freeze, or any other economic hardship, keep your outside search going in parallel.
Check your own company the way you’d check one you’re applying to: layoffs, buyouts, leadership changes, hiring freezes, etc. Each one is worth taking seriously, but none is proof on its own.
Talk to interns in other orgs. The Adobe report was about one org, so your situation can look different from the company headline.
If you need visa sponsorship, build your backup list earlier than you normally would.
Ask for a recommendation letter. If you’re not getting a RO after a strong internship, ask them for a recommendation letter. It can be something you bring up in a later interview and might help you land another job.
A few other things we’re seeing
Google added an AI Fluency round for New Grad SWE
A Google candidate said their central review team requires one more virtual interview, non-coding, focused on AI fluency. The email they received calls it a core competency in Google’s engineering evaluation. You’ll be asked to talk through how you’ve used AI tools in real work and the impact it had. I believe this is a trend that other companies will be adopting, so have a couple of specific projects ready to walk through.
Bloomberg’s early rounds expect you to use AI
One candidate in round four says rounds one and two were fully AI-assisted, and you’re expected to use AI for everything. Round two was reportedly a codebase with several tickets, and solving just one was enough to move on to round three: a system design round.
Patreon might have cancelled its Summer 2027 PM internship
A candidate shared a rejection email saying Patreon has closed the Product Manager Intern, Summer 2027 role and won’t be moving forward with interviews. It’s one email, so we don’t know if it reached everyone who applied.
