What Candidates Are Seeing
The Hiring Cycle Is Moving Faster Than the Job Boards
Roles are closing before candidates can even get through step one. Company referrals are no longer securing you through the doors with how fast some of these postings disappear.
Adobe is the clearest example. At an Adobe event, a recruiter reportedly flat-out said that speed matters more than referrals right now. A few days later, the Adobe AI-deployed engineer role, which opened just last week, was already closed before a candidate could even ask for a referral (the step everyone usually tells you to do first).
NVIDIA is showing the same thing. The NVIDIA compiler engineer role, which also opened last week, is already closed too. A candidate who talked to NVIDIA recruiters in person at a hackathon reports that NVIDIA seems to be tracking who shows up to their events and not just applying online. Like we said last week, attending events and getting your application in beforehand is becoming a requirement for consideration.
CME Group backs this up too. A candidate report on CME says speed matters a lot more than referrals unless you can actually get a “good” one (not just any random one). CME runs an info session every year specifically tied to their internship programs, which lines up with the same pattern: get in early, get in through the right channel, or risk missing the window entirely.
None of this means referrals aren’t helpful. It just means the window to use them is shrinking, and a few companies are now openly telling candidates that out loud.
What this means for candidates
Don't wait on a referral before you apply. Apply first, then chase the referral in parallel if you can.
If a company's running an event, hackathon, or info session, attendance isn’t optional anymore for some of these roles. Companies continue to track attendance, and CME straight up builds its hiring around an annual session.
If referrals are your plan, get one lined up before a role opens, not after you see the posting; otherwise, you might be too late.
A few other things we’re seeing
What Came Out of Tesla's Chapel Hill Event
Here are a few tips from the event. When applying, tailor your resume language to the specific role instead of reusing the same version everywhere, and structure your interview answers with the WHO framework (what you did, how you did it, and what came of it). For timelines, hiring can apparently happen anywhere between 1-6 months before a role's actual start date. Finally, intern referrals reportedly go through the same pipeline as everyone else's, so don't assume they carry less weight.
Google's APM Round Skipped Behavioral Entirely
One candidate said their APM interview went straight into product questions with zero behavioral. They also mentioned that candidates who make it to round one get handed a study guide with the 4 question types they'll actually be asked. If you're in this pipeline, don’t skip reading it.
One Thing I Want To Know
If you missed out on a role because it closed faster than expected this cycle, reply with the company and how many days (or hours) passed between posting and close. We're curious how often this is happening.
